Den->Vegas->Den

My dad sends me a text message: "Hey I bought a car in Vegas. Do you want to fly out with me and drive back the next day?". Hell yes I do. He bought a Pontiac Solstice which is a pretty sweet car if you know much about cars. Its the last new Pontiac model ever and is pretty rare an interesting. Even apart from the history it is a great small convertible sports car from an American manufacturer. You don't see that much.

The trip was a blast. We cruised through some awesome national parks on the way home. We didn't have much time in them, but it made the drive way more fun. This trip is one for the memory books.

A Trip to Brainard Lake

Our very good friends Matt and Carol and their sweet girl Norah visited us last week. We made a day trip up to Brainard Lake to get some fresh mountain air. It was absolutely beautiful and we couldn't have asked for a better day.

I shot with my X100F and a Polarizer Filter and processed with Mastin Labs Gold 200. The Polarizer filter gave a really interesting effect to the water and sky. I need to play with it some more.

A Week of Black and White

Last week my brother and I decided to challenge ourselves and shoot only black and white for an entire week. It was a very interesting challenge for me. Going into it I knew it would be difficult, but I didn't anticipate how much I would fall in love with it. About halfway through the week things just "clicked" and I really started to love it.

All photography is an abstraction of reality, but monochrome gives images an added layer of abstraction that allows express feelings in a way that the more literal color photography does not. I still really love color, but I have fallen in love with what black and white allows me to do.

After this week I have decided to mostly dedicate my X100f to black and white. It is my little rangefinder "loaded with Tri-X" that I can grab and shoot at any moment. I think you will see a lot more black and white in my portfolio moving forward.

Denver Street Photography: Color

I ended up with way more color shots from this walk than I did monochrome ones. I LOVE black and white photography and I would really love to get goo at it, but I just see the world so much in color. I love color. I know this is an area that I need to grow, but I also want to embrace the fact that I do love color.

These were all shot as JPEG's in my Fuji cameras using the Classic Chrome film simulation. I like the way it looks a lot, but I will probably shoot RAW from now on. I like having the control in post. These images could use just  little bit of "punch" as well. They are a little flat for me.

Overall I like what I got. I am learning every-time I go out, but it is a hunt. Its like a game and it never gets old. I can't wait to hit the streets again.

Denver Street Photography: Monochrome

I finally got the chance to actually walk around the city a little bit today and practice some street photography. I shot in both monochrome using the Across film simulation and in color using the Classic Chrome simulation. The color images will be in the next post.

Street photography is very much a challenge for me. I have become competent and comfortable in the other forms of photography that I shoot, but when shooting on the street, I feel like a complete newbie. It is hard, much harder than I anticipated. I am pretty happy with the images that I got, but I have a very, very long way to go.
